When most people think of Belize they think of the Blue Hole, diving, and beautiful beaches, but you can’t go to Belize and not visit the Mayan ruins. It’s a magical experience. A word of advice, ask for the “most passionate guide.” It makes the experience more than a history lesson. Some people on the mainland, never leave the mainland. They love their home, love their ancestory, and LOVE telling people about it. THAT’S the person you want walking you through the ruins.
This is a pic of Altun Ha /ɑːlˈtuːn hɑː/[1] is the name given to the ruins of an ancient Maya city in Belize, located in the Belize District about 50 kilometres (31 mi) north of Belize City and about 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) west of the shore of the Caribbean Sea. The site covers an area of about 8 square kilometres (3.1 sq mi).

Stones from the ruins of the ancient structures were reused for residential construction of the agricultural village of Rockstone Pond in modern times, but the ancient site did not come to the attention of archeologists until 1963. The Old Northern Highway connects Altun Ha to Belize’s Northern Highway, and the site is accessible for tourism. The largest of Altun Ha’s temple-pyramids, the “Temple of the Masonry Altars”, is 16 metres (52 ft) high. A drawing of this structure is the logo of Belize’s leading brand of beer, “Belikin”. I’ve been a huge beer drinker other than a good micro brew stout or porter, but Belikin is my favorite beer. Maybe it’s because I’m always sitting in the sun with friends and family when drinking it, but it is a yummy beer!
Belize Adventures Await
Belize is a treasure trove of adventures waiting to be discovered. Beyond its stunning azure waters and sandy shores, the country offers experiences that delve deep into its rich history and vibrant culture. Imagine wandering through ancient Maya ruins, where each stone tells a story of civilizations past. Engaging with spirited locals adds a personal touch to your journey, making every interaction memorable. And, of course, toasting to your adventures in Belize with a refreshing Belikin beer is the perfect way to end the day.
When it comes to adrenaline-pumping activities, Belize adventures don’t disappoint. The jungles beckon thrill-seekers with the promise of rappelling down cascading waterfalls, each descent more exhilarating than the last. Exploring ancient Maya caves, some transformed into mesmerizing sinkholes, offers a unique blend of history and adventure that’s hard to match. Whether you’re navigating the depths of these caves or feeling the rush of a waterfall rappel, the experiences are bound to leave an indelible mark on your memory.
For those who crave the serenity of island life, Ambergris Caye and San Pedro offer a delightful contrast to the mainland’s rugged adventures. While they may be miles away from the thrill of cliff rappelling, the islands have their own unique charm. Swimming alongside nurse sharks is an experience that combines excitement with a profound connection to marine life. On fortunate days, the graceful presence of sea turtles adds to the underwater spectacle. Each visit to the island brings its own set of surprises, ensuring that no two Belize adventures are ever the same.
It’s essential to approach these adventures with respect and awareness. While nurse sharks are generally docile, giving them ample space ensures both your safety and theirs. Capturing these moments is tempting, but always prioritize the well-being of the wildlife over the perfect shot. Investing in proper equipment, like an underwater camera, can enhance the experience, but it’s crucial to use it responsibly. After all, the true essence of Belize adventures lies in the harmonious blend of thrill and respect for nature.
In essence, Belize offers a spectrum of experiences that cater to both the adventurous spirit and the seeker of tranquility. From the depths of its ancient caves to the vibrant life of its coral reefs, every moment spent here is a testament to the country’s diverse allure. So, whether you’re raising a glass of Belikin beer after a day of exploration or reminiscing about the day’s underwater encounters, adventures in Belize promise memories that will last a lifetime.
