Belize has a way of slowing things down, clearing the mind, and making you appreciate life in a way that’s hard to find elsewhere. The people here are warm and welcoming and has a little bit of everything.

The first time we went to San Pedro, I parked the golf cart and a local warned me, “they’ll give you a ticket.” I looked around—no sign, no red stripe on the curbe for no parking zones. Like a dumbass, I didn’t believe him:(

We went on with our day, but sure enough, there it was a ticket on the cart. I’m still not exactly sure why, but that day, I learned to trust the good intentions of a local San Pedro gesture.

I regret not showing appreciation in the moment. Looking back, that day taught me to genuinely value the warm people of Belize. Although tourism is the #1 source of revenue in the country, that’s not the reason locals are so friendly. In fact, their kindness is simply a part of the island’s culture.

Just like anywhere else, some areas in Belize are best to avoid. However, we only encountered that once while traveling on the mainland. After taking a wrong turn on the way to the ferry port, we briefly found ourselves in a genulinely uncomfortable situation.
